...is coming to a LYS near ME!!! Well, ok it's in South Bend, but that's much better than going in the other direction into Chicago! Thank the Goddess that i checked in to see if the Harlot had posted anything new since the shawl orgy on the 26th or i might not have found out until after it was over!!!
This may seem like terribly exciting news except...we're supposed to be at Church on Octotober 2nd at 11am and she's scheduled for 10am. :( So i'm trying to talk the wife into skipping church and meeting up with the people we are supposed to meet with, after service is over at like Noonish or Noon-thirty!
And now i have to fly because after waiting all morning and into the afternoon for Deb to be ready to elave to go to my Mom's to do laundry and to run errands, she's ready now that i am sharing exciting Harlot news! Hrumph!!!

Extreme Home Makeover
Have you tried to knit while watching this show?? Well, don't. Just don't even bother or you'll be wiping away your tears on that new Alpaca scarf you're knitting. I just cannot watch this show without keeping my eyes dry, damn them! I don't know why i keep watching it...i could have very well popped in disk two of season one of Alias and knit along without needing to dry my eyes for several episodes i'm sure! But nooooooo!! Oh well, such is life.
So anyway, Deb called from work tonight talking about going back out on the road again, which would clearly take her away from home for days on end and would mean that she would have to go back to school to reclaim her CDL because she let it lapse by not taking her DOT physical in a timely manner. What's even worse about the whole situation is that if she leaves, that leaves me with no way to get around because i don't think driving the small Volvo would be comfortable for me, i don't think i could do it...and our truck is still in disrepair and of course, we do not have the money to get it fixed. I'm not at all thrilled about the prospect of Deb going out on the road...the stress of worrying about her and missing her like hell is NOT worth the extra money, IF there would be any extra money. As i keep pointing out to her, the last time she was driving she kept going on and on about how she used to bring home these $800 paychecks before she knew me...well i never once saw her bring home that kind of money. By the time she bought meals and any equipment she needed etc. the pay was piddly. But i keep telling her how i feel about the whole situation, but she needs to decide for herself what she wants to do...i cannot profess to love her as i do and yet hold her down under my thumb. She must be somewhat free to persue the job she wants. It just sucks that she can't seem to find something satisfactory here. Of course it doesn't help that i'm only working to cover the roof over our head and that the amount our landlord/my boss feels is a fair amount each month is our rent plus $300. If you were to presume that i am to work a 40 hour week with there being 4 weeks in a month...then he only considers me to be worth about $4.65/hour which is not even as much as minimum wage!!! Doesn't that suck ass?!! It ends up being less than i was making working for my brother watching his kids. And i know that i am worth at least $10/hour in the work that i do. So, i tell you this...i no longer kill myself to work 40 hours each week. I refuse to do it. And i no longer do very much work at all on the weekends except to see what i need to ship out on Mondays...that's it. I'm not being compensated enough to be on call 24/7. With what i am "earning" now vs our monthly rent and the back-rent we owed...it will take us until December 2006 to pay back our debt of back-rent...so i don't even pocket the extra $300 each month, it goes toward that. It sucks!
But anyway, on to happier news...here's a picture of the first finished dishcloth. The blue one behind it i decided to make a bit larger and it's not done yet. When it's finished, i'm going to see which size i like better.

The color is actually better in this close up of the crocheted edging...

Ok, i'm off to finish the blue one now. Have a good night. Sorry for the ranting.

Been waiting for these?
Before Kat makes the 3-4 hour drive down from Michigan - to flog me...here are pictures of what i've been working on for the past week.
Granny square lap blankets for our ongoing, yearly Yuletime donation to local nursing homes...

Here's the Purple one before i did a partial frogging. I had realized that i didn't have enough yarn in the colors i started out using so i had to add something that worked with what i had so far without ripping out the whole thing. UGH! I'm trying to use up all of my acrylic stash on these lap blankets, because clearly they need to be economical to make - plus they need to be really washer friendly to go to a nursing home.
Here's the other one that i started...and ran out of yarn for...and have nothing that goes with it...so it will sit.

...my intent was to do the outter edge in the same thing as the center. Who knows if this is how it will end up...i've not decided yet. I might frog it and use this other Homespun that i have that has blues and tans in it, even if Deb says it won't go together!

Purple one finished tonight! It's folded in fourths in this picture. I'll take it over to Revia tomorrow, she's our project coordinator.
And here's the new project started moments after the lap blanket was finished...

...impressive so far, isn't it? Heehee!! Ok, so it's only 8 rows along. It's going to be a dish cloth made with the cotton that Lynne gave me, destined to be sold at our Holiday Bazaar. I'm using the dish cloths to learn new stitches.
This is "Moss Stitch". Which is a cast on of a multiple of 2. Row 1: K1 P1 across. Row 2: Knit 1 P1 Across. Row 3: P1 K1 Across. Row 4: P1 K1 Across. Repeat Rows 1-4. I'm using size 6 straight Aluminum needles, although i wish i had bamboo in this size(i only have 10's) to use so that the yarn wouldn't want to slip off the needles so easily. I tried using my size 8 circs but was having a hard time with them...so i switched to these. Here's a closeup of the stitch...

If you click on the image it should bring up a bit of a larger one to see better.
There, Kat...there's your pictures!!
We'll be at Mom's doing laundry tomorrow and then over to Revia & Tdstraightjacket's house for Gaming Night. WooHoo!!!
Happy Knitting & Crocheting Everyone!!

A Unitarian Bazaar
...or as Deb and i like to call it, "The Bizarre Bazaar", but Lynne won't let us!! Mean Lynne, Vicious Lynne...ok, i digress-inside joke!
So, it's that time of the year already! In fact, i think we're running a bit late. It seems that the summer has vanished away and we hardly saw our friend Lynne at all during the course of the whole summer and now that the Church Year has begun we're fast and furiously getting caught up into things that need to be done. Lynne and i, with a TON of help from Deb decided to organize a Holiday Bazaar last year at our Unitarian Church. They hadn't had one in no-one-knows how long! It turned out pretty well last year and we took notes on suggestions from the Vendors and any one else who had input on things to do differently this year...so we are hoping to add our Minister, Roger Brewin, as "Father Christmas" in the church basement area where the Bake Sale & Coffee Shoppe will be held. We're also going to be adding a Kids - Make & Take table where kids can pay a small fee and make an ornament to take home with them...so basically it will give the kids something to do while their parents browse around or visit. We're thinking about offering pictures with Father Christmas but need to locate either a Polaroid camera or someone who has a digi cam/printer combo and is willing to loan it or come run it for us...
So i spent some time today trying to contact our Vendors from last year. Got one "yes" so far and left messages on all other phones except the one that was disconnected since last season. And i also have a lead on one new vendor. So that's cool. Too bad all of my favorite knitting people live so far away! You gals could have a booth!
In other Church news...Deb has agreed to help with one or more children's RE (religious education) classesduring the year. We went an hour early this past Sunday to join in with the Adult RE -First Hour discussion group that meets before Sunday Worship Services. The topic this week was "Heros". Who are our heros and why? What constitutes a hero? And much discussion over whether or not a hero has to be a real person and how one person's hero could be another person's nightmare, etc. I didn't have anything to really say so i just sit and worked on a lap blanket and listened. Maybe i'll have some input next time? I don't do well in front of groups of people i don't know.
That's about it for this morning...i'm thinking about some digi pics later on today so hang tight and Knit on!!
Oh wait...i have to tell about the "inside joke" referrenced at the opening of this post. We went over to Lynne's house on Sunday to visit and she's got this one dog who plays really viciously with his toys...so Lynne was egging him on with things like, "Where's the squirrel? get that vicious squirrel" And the dog would growl and swing his head with his rubber bone swinging back and forth - clenched tightly in his teeth. And then Lynne said, "Where's Bush, get that mean ole Bush...we don't like Bush do we?" and the dog just got meaner and meaner and more vicious...it cracked us all up!! Heehee!!

Stash
Ok, not mine...someone else's!!
It's nice having generous friends who knit!! yesterday Deb and i spent most of the afternoon with our friend Lynne. Lynne is a knit-a-holic! We went over to Lynne's house and she pulled out all of her knitting books and showed us her prized stash some of the yarn, i forget the name, she had gotten while she still worked at Michael's for 40 cents/skein...originally $8.00/skein!!! She'd have been a fool to pass that up!!
Among Lynne's stash was a spare skein of Homespun in "Edwardian" which is exactly what i need to finish Conner's sweater and she also gave me some kitchen cotton to make some wash-cloths for our Holiday Bazaar at the UU Church. Thank you, thank you to Lynne for letting me have that yarn!! Woohoo!! I also borrowed these two books from her, so i'm busy reading through them and looking at patterns. Too much fun!!
Over the weekend i also started two new lap blankets for our ongoing lap blanket project, both are just giant granny squares, crocheted. The first one i started on Friday and ran out of yarn that goes with it and the second one i started yesterday during Adult RE at Church and it's made from scraps from previous lap blankets...in purples and cream. I think i am going to finish the second lap blanket and then move back to Conner's sweater.
Happy Monday Everyone!!

Quickie
Here's a quicky to post some pictures from Em & Jeff's "After Vegas Wedding Party"

My Step-Sister, Emily & Jeff during the blessing with her Uncle Phil.

During a reading about Emily's Grandpa who had passed away several years ago.

My Dad & Em's Mom...our P's.

Me & my Julia! One of the children i used to care for each day...oh i remember when we moved back to help with her and Conner and they were only 2! Now they are 7 and in the 1st grade!! How time flies!

Deb & Conner, Julia's twin.

My other nephew, London. He is Jen & Steve's son.
(for those confused...i have a step-sister named Jen and a soon to be sister-in-law named Jen...two different girls!!)
That wraps it up for now. I have to go peel eggs for deviled eggs and take my shower before i wake Deb up. We have to get ready to go over to Dad & Lynn's for a cookout today!
Happy Labor Day, everyone!! Isn't this a knitting holiday?!!! Knit on!!

My Dad Never Ceases To Amaze Me
Deb and i were talking on our way to my step-sister's party today and we were discussing how my Dad has a rental property in Panama City Beach...i've talked about it here a few times as hurricanes come and go because we family members always keep our eyes glued to the Weather Channel during hurricane season - out of concern for my Dad's property. Deb and i were talking about how wonderful it would be if all of the people who had rental properties sitting idle (not yet filled by seasonal snowbirds) with no reservations pending - would offer to let a family who lost their home in Louisiana or Mississippi come and stay in their rental until they either had a reservation coming in or until the family could get their affairs sorted out. We wondered if there would be any tax write off due to it being a charitable gesture, etc. And i decided i would talk to my Dad about it the first chance i got when we got to the party today.
A time came up, we were talking about the hurricane victims and how the whole rescue mission got off to a painfully slow start, how we all hate Bush and think he's such a putz, how it annoys us when Jessie Jackson's head shows up everywhere all over the globe, how the media is more focused on cries of racial injustice rather than focusing on the real stories of loss and hardship, etc., etc. And then i remembered what Deb and i had been talking about and brought it up to my Dad and his words were, "...already done!"
I was at a loss for words! I was so amazed at having had the same thought process...and, ok...a little frightened, and i have to say, i was really proud of my Dad for his very kind gesture!
Apparently what had happened was he had received a settlement check in the mail on Monday for the damages done during the last hurricane and had called the Property Management Company and was talking with a woman there who had 14 members of her family, who were from Louisiana and now hurricane victims - all living at her house with her and her immediate family. After my Dad hung up with her he checked on the reservations and knew that there is no one due to go to the condo until him & Lynn go in a few weeks and so he called Lynn and asked her what she thought of offering their unit to the woman's family members, they agreed on it and my Dad called her right back. He said that she cried and thanked him over and over.
I think the condo sleeps 6 or 7 comfortably, it's bi-level with two and a half baths, laundry room, & totally equiped kitchen. All the people need to do is provide their food and everything else is there. The only thing i worried about is how they would feel being right on the beach...maybe a bit wary? At least it's a roof over their heads, good water and washing facilities to be clean and safe and they can all spread out instead of being in one house...even if it's only for a while.
Way to go Dad! You're my hero!

Today...the "After Vegas Wedding Party" for my step-sister, Emily and her husband, Jeff. They were married in Vegas in January of this year. Should be a fun day...it's outdoor, casual, open-bar/buffet...needless to say, i'll knit today!!
Conner's size 8 sweater...the back is done and about 15 rows of the front.
Pictures later to come...
Knit on!!
